Now is a great time to be part of the New Zealand fashion industry. Across Aotearoa, a new generation of creative minds are building on an already rich fashion culture, with an audience that increasingly stretches well beyond the country
New Zealand Fashion Week is a natural meeting point for that community. Held annually around Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), the week brings designers, stylists, editors and models together to celebrate the local industry. And, as with any good fashion week, the story continues beyond the runway, with showgoers taking to the streets and turning the city into an extension of the shows themselves.
There’s no better homage than seeing showgoers wear the designers they’ve come to see, and this year was no exception. The schedule itself is a good reflection of the breadth of the industry right now, bringing together established names like Juliette Hogan, Karen Walker and Zambesi, alongside a newer generation including Caitlin Crisp, Elle & Riley, Harris Tapper and Bronwyn Footwear.
There’s an ease to New Zealand style that makes it so compelling to observe. Showgoers have mastered the art of being considered without being overly precious, with plenty of room to mix things up and have a little fun. Tailoring (including plenty of outerwear for the winter chill) sits alongside softer silhouettes, while vintage finds and the odd unexpected accessory or pop of colour keep things interesting.
And really, that’s what makes NZFW street style so good: there’s no one way to dress, nor is there a sense that everyone is trying to look the same. Instead, the streets are full of championing local designers, and wearing what they like.
