What is your standpoint on sustainability, and what does it mean to you?
Shopping sustainably means that with my purchase an entire cycle can be influenced – just because of me. In fashion, for me, it is about giving importance to the origins, and thinking about where it comes from. The use of organic fabrics and care for those producing the clothing is important to me.
However I see two sides to it. Just because a fashion label is producing sustainably it doesn’t always mean that it is really sustainable. They are trying to produce sustainably and secure fair wages, but this does not always work. The entire production chain has become so complex and not very transparent, so that the cycle of one piece it is rarely comprehensible. I think the most sustainable was to produce clothing is locally, in my case Germany.
I do have to be honest and say that it is still hard for me to buy clothing from fair labels. Finding a fitting jeans or a special top is something that I still only see in fast fashion or second hand.
I don’t think it is about buying fair fashion, but more so to establish a certain sensitivity when shopping. We should be asking our selves:
-
Will I wear this piece a lot?
-
Does it fit to my other things, and is it easy to combine?
-
Can I give this piece a long life?
