The snakeskin fashion we’d let slither into our wardrobes

Snakeskin is the only snake we’re letting into our lives. Jokes aside, the pattern has long held a certain compelling sensuality, moving quickly from the realm of quirky accessories to become a fashionable mainstay.

It’s been a long time coming. In fact, TIME magazine took note of snakeskin’s burgeoning popularity in clothing way back in the 1970s. Around the same time, one of fashion’s most influential designers, Yves Saint Laurent, helped propel the shift with his 1970 Haute Couture collection, which saw python prints rendered across chiffon – a motif that would come to feel almost synonymous with the house.

Today, we see snakeskin incorporated into fashion almost as readily as we would a primary colour. As maximalist fashion is reconsidered, tactile textures like pony hair and snakeskin – frequently seen on the runway – are making a case for the anti-minimalist wardrobe. With snakeskin patterned bags, jackets, pants and shoes appearing in increasing variety, one could argue that the print has become something of a neutral. Its newest iteration can be remarkably restrained. A python pump against tailored pants, a snakeskin-effect bag paired with an all-black look, or a single reptilian coat worn over something otherwise austere. In each case, the pattern retains its controlled sense of danger.

It’s becoming less rock ’n’ roll costume and more considered provocation, with its appeal lying in the tension between polish and rebellion.
