It feels like only yesterday that we were throwing on flimsy dresses and prancing around the streets in nothing but our silly little summer outfits. How times have changed. We can no longer delay the inevitable: winter is well and truly here.
The good thing about living in the Southern Hemisphere is we get to watch those up North venture out, experiment and a season later, we get to learn from their sartorial wins.
Like most years, there are some winter trends that will forever stand the test of time, while other pieces are simply too good to ignore. Below, the winter fashion trends we’re dabbling in for 2026.
1. Statement jackets

We’ve already declared 2026 the year of the statement jacket. When you’ve got winter wardrobe fatigue – typically caused by an influx of greys, blacks, and general layers – the perfect antidote is a cool jacket. Textured collars, interesting sleeves, perhaps a bold print, even just a block colour; there’s a myriad ways to wear the trend this year.
Brands like Maison Essentiele, The Wolf Gang and Carelli have long been setting the standard for faux-fur trimmed moments, while Saint Laurent and Eaves have us craving retro windbreakers in bold colours. And if you’re not sure what you’re after, but know that you want it to look cool, Reformation is a treasure trove of great outerwear.
2. Low-rise denim

Hailey Bieber’s GAP collaboration has low-rise denim on the tip of our tongues, but it’s a trend that’s been gaining traction for some time now. We’re taking our cues from the late 90s and early 2000s this winter and loosening our waistbands – the style du jour is lower and baggier than we’ve seen before. The Row has (unsurprisingly) delivered on the perfectly cut pair of low rise denim, with their Fima jeans. Agolde, SLVRLAKE, and Citizens of Humanity have all given their take on the trend and, a little closer to home, Neuw Denim and Christopher Esber are worht looking into.
3. Brown suede everything

Much to the RUSSH team’s delight, brown suede is punctuating our entire wardrobe this winter, from slouchy shoulder bags and Western-inspired boots, to jackets and mini skirts. Rich and warm, it brings a softness to classic winter silhouettes, and a unique ability to make simple styles feel interesting again. Top of our list? Nour Hammour’s Dalma Suede Bomber Jacket, St Agni’s Wrap Skirt, Reformation’s Dominic Knee Boots, and P Johnson’s Isabella Suede Trench Coat in Taupe.
4. Wrapped up in cardigans

The humble cardigan isn’t exactly a new winter trend, but that doesn’t diminish it’s impact. Slouchy and soft, slim-fitting or oversized, they’re just as effective (and chic) worn buttoned up, or draped over bare shoulders when the weather permits. To really lean into the pep of it all, look to Miu Miu, and this wool and cashmere blend cardigan, or Polo Ralph Lauren with their classic logo style. There’s whimsical styles, a la this beautiful embroidered piece from BODE. And at the other end of the spectrum, COS, Scanlan Theodore, and Viktoria & Woods offer simple, staple styles you’ll love for seasons to come.
5. Leather midi skirts

No, leather skirts for winter aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but that doesn’t mean we’re not championing them. We’re channelling Saint Laurent’s Spring Summer 26 collection with longline styles in rich hues this winter – dark chocolate, espresso, midnight black. Up the ante with a pair of knee high boots and a a skin-baring top for an evening look, or throw on an oversized shirt and a pair of sunglasses for a daytime ensemble.
Khaite delivers on a slightly longer length for those looking to extend their hemline, while Proenza Schouler’s Irine style hits that sweet spot just below the knee. If you prefer a fully-bodied style, you’ll love Arma’s Eleni midi skirt in chocolate brown, and Scanlan Theodore’s A-line style in black.
6. Layers on layers (on layers)

More is more when it comes to this season’s layering trend. This is a movement we first saw taking off on the runway, and it’s one we’re certainly not mad about – looking chic and keeping warm? Yes please. Plenty of brands have delivered on the trend with pieces that come pre-layered. There’s St Agni’s cleverly-lined long sleeve in organic cotton, for example, or Five By Flynn’s shoulder-baring iteration. But if you prefer to take matters into your own hands, you can also build up your layering wardrobe piece by piece. Shirting, long sleeves (patterns welcome), singlets, and jackets are all practically begging to be layered this season.
7. Scarves, snoods, and balaclavas

The rest of your body might be freezing, but at least your head and neck will be warm. This winter is all about snuggly, luxurious fabrics that cocoon. This cashmere snood from COS is an easy way to inject a little colour to an outfit, or for those seriously worried about braving the cold, Acne Studios has devised a seamless balaclava from merino wool.
In the realm of scarves, you’re really spoilt for choice this season. Some, like this butter yellow COS number and this fiery red RÓHE piece, are petite in proportion. Others, like this checked Burberry style, feel more akin to a blanket than a scarf. For something that fits neatly in the middle, look to Jil Sander and Bruno Cucinelli.
